5 tips for a successful surprise wedding

5 tips for a successful surprise wedding

Fun, funny and oh so memorable; I think that these photos from Be Frankie Photography say it all..

And although Lucas and Claire's family and friends were supportive and got into the spirit of things when the big reveal was made, there was a lot of groundwork that went on behind the scenes to make it all look easy and effortless on the day.

Here are a few key points that you need to address and/or consider to ensure that your surprise wedding is just as successful and doesn't fall flat.

Lucy & Duncan - Longview Vineyard

Lucy & Duncan - Longview Vineyard

When I first sat down with Duncan and Lucy, I didn't know at the time that they are both immensely musically talented (Lucy is a classical double bassist and Duncan a multi-instrumentalist), but we just clicked.

There is soooo much to love about their December wedding day and I literally could not cull down the number their photos that I wanted to share with you any further than I already have. Simon Bills is just amazing and the story he has captured here is incredible.

Seriously, just have a scroll through these and you will feel as if you know the Bride and Groom.

Rayleen & Paul - Adelaide CBD

Paul and Rayleen, who first met when Paul was in town from Melbourne for business, were initially drawn to one another by their quirky sense of humour and shared taste in music and dumplings. It stood to reason that their wedding day should include a decent helping of laughs, music, good food and fun..

Kelly & Tysen - Howard Vineyard

Tysen and Kelly's ceremony is a great example of what can be achieved when there is trust and consistent and open communication. Right from our first meeting around 13 months before the big day, they knew what they wanted and better still, told me all about it.

The vision was a warm and intimate, pared-back, but still elegant celebration inclusive of their best friends and family. Kelly's skills as a graphic designer were going to be at the core of the fresh and romantic aesthetic.

Kylie and Chris - Partridge House, Glenelg

Chris and Kylie like to do things their way.

But whether it's riding their bikes, having fun with their kids, Judd and Kobe, or simply laughing at each other's expense; they live life to the full.

I don't think I have ever laughed as hard or as often in a ceremony as I did during theirs.

Kylie conceded that their house IS similar to a prison camp when she forgets to buy chicken chips and Chris promised not to hold Kylie's obsession with Johnny Farnham against her. Aaaw, how sweet!

Living in Victoria and trying to organise a wedding in South Australia could pose a bit of a logistical challenge for some couples. But for Shelli and Brayden, they took it all in their stride.

Shelli has since told me that all of their suppliers (see detailed list at end of this post) were "absolutely fantastic throughout the planning and made the day so easy and relaxing for us."

That's just how Brayden and Shelli roll.

Corinne and David - Music Festival Wedding

Corinne and David - Music Festival Wedding

David and Corinne first met 6 years ago when they worked together at the (sadly) now closed Krypton Discs in Glenelg. Their mutual love of music drew them together and so it was only fitting that their wedding day had a healthy helping of quality live music as well.

They took their special day to the next level by introducing an upmarket (with mismatched vintage furniture from By The Oaktree & toilets that worked!) music festival vibe complete with picnic blankets and an awesome food truck at Karka Pavilion in the Belair National Park.

Jenna and Brent - A Bohemian Affair

Jenna and Brent - A Bohemian Affair

Jenna and Brent first met in high school over 10.5 years ago. And even though they were always close, nothing ever happened between them.

Their wedding at Longview Vineyard, captured beautifully by Ellen Heather Photography, was warm and relaxed and their decor featured lashings of deep red accents, oriental rugs and unstructured florals. Their bridal party entourage was as cool as they were well dressed and the atmosphere was simply a laid back celebration of love and life.

Festival of fun - Kat & Matt

Festival of fun - Kat & Matt

After almost 8 years as a celebrant in Adelaide, it's rare that I get the chance to visit a new wedding venue. But when Kat and Matt first met with me and told me about their ideas for an outdoor extravaganza of activities and dancing at The Oaks in Hahndorf (2202 Mt Barker Road), I was excited to check it out.

It's a beautiful, undulating property with lots of trees, a little stream and several open grassed spaces for marquees. The owners are lovely and accommodating too which just added even more ease and goodwill into Kat and Matt's unconventional celebration. I mean, the confetti cannon fist bump when Matt collected Kat from the top of the aisle was just the beginning!

I could try describing their wedding to you, let alone the beautiful and generous people they are, but I think these shots by Akil Madan Photography do the job so much better than I ever could. Congratulations again, Kat and Matt ox.

Enjoy!

Short and sweet - Kailah & Ben

Short and sweet - Kailah & Ben

Ben and Kailah's wedding was held at the beautiful Glen Ewin Estate in the Adelaide hills. Like many of my couples when we first meet, they didn't have a clear idea what they were wanting for their ceremony. But as they were engaged in January 2013 and their wedding wasn't until late 2015, they had plenty of time to work it out.
